The Everyday Celebrity: DeAndre Steward of Daygo Performance

The Everyday Celebrity: DeAndre Steward of Daygo Performance

The Everyday Celebrity Series

Every city has its celebrities.

Not just the ones on billboards or TV screens, but the people building something real in their communities every single day. The barbers who know every customer by name. The café owners who remember your order before you say it. The entrepreneurs who not only turn passion into profit, but the ones who also build something meaningful that impacts the people around them.

The Everyday Celebrity Series, also known as EDC Spotlight, was created for those people to have their story told. Business owners, content creators, and community leaders who are making big strides in their respective industry but simply need a little help doing the hard part—marketing.

As a local content creator providing marketing services in San Diego, I understand first hand how a consistent media push is essentially a non-negotiable to compete in any industry. Great businesses need visibility. However, most small businesses struggle finding time to create it. The constant need for storytelling through professional photography, video production, website SEO, and social media content has become the inevitable bridge between a neighborhood favorite and a national contender.

Sadly, that bridge isn’t a yellow brick road. For most entrepreneurs, it’s a bridge missing steps.

Although this road can be very overwhelming, it isn’t one that has to be walked alone. My #1 goal for this series is to reassure these diamonds in the rough that their stories alone are powerful enough to transcend any algorithm. Camera effects, trendy audios, and viral moments are simply tools; the real impact comes from the story itself. When customers can see the face behind a brand, hear the journey behind the business, and feel the passion behind the work, that connection is what turns attention into support.

Our world is in need of less flash and more transparency. In other words, more representation of what’s possible no matter where you come from. Although some follow the hype, others prefer to build it. That’s why I’m proud to introduce you all to the first ever feature of the Everyday Celebrity series: De’Andre Steward of Daygo Performance.

MEET DEANDRE

At just 28 years old, De’Andre is not only a fitness trainer but the co-owner of the top-rated Black-owned gym in San Diego County, currently holding the #1 rank on Yelp for its category.

That’s a huge accomplishment for someone still under 30.

What impresses me most about Stew, as his clients call him, isn’t just the ranking or the amount of success he’s had in business thus far. The most intriguing part about De’Andre’s story is his ability to build a community deeply rooted in purpose. I find nothing wrong with an individual embarking on a journey for monetary value, but to fund your livelihood based on your passion to fill the gaps in your community is the ultimate testament of De’Andre’s character.

“That’s why I tell people all the time – I am making money from helping people, and I feel like that’s God's gift for me. I feel like that’s what God put me on this earth for. My only job is to make someone else feel better and be better”

De’Andre was born and raised in the Southeast of San Diego with humble beginnings. His upbringing taught him how to make do with limited resources, rather than allowing it to become an excuse. Like many young adults trying to find their path, his journey wasn’t a straight line.

After graduating high school, he spent a short time in college before eventually serving as a military police officer. When that chapter of his life ended, he found himself at a crossroads.

In 2020, just before the world shut down, De’Andre leaned fully into his passion for fitness and health. While many businesses were closing their doors, he used the unexpected downtime to stack up on certifications, sharpen his training knowledge, and begin working with clients outdoors at a local park.

Many entrepreneurs often fall short in moments like these and become victims of perfection paralysis. The urge to delay a launch date until every area of the startup is aesthetically pleasing is far too common, but this is where De’Andre separates. He never waited until everything looked official — a gym space, a logo, or an LLC. He simply started with what he had, because the mission was never about looking established. It was about making an impact.

The park became the foundation of what Daygo Performance would eventually grow into. With no fancy equipment and no polished facility, the focus shifted to what really mattered: energy, creativity, and connection. Workouts were built on effort and accountability, and the sense of community formed naturally.

Those early sessions also revealed the qualities that make DeAndre the trainer his clients know today. His outgoing, motivational, and uplifting spirit is exactly what you’d look for in someone responsible for pushing people to become their best — physically and mentally.

BUILDING DAYGO PERFORMANCE

After securing six consistent clients independently, DeAndre reached a turning point in his career as a fitness trainer. With a small but loyal client base already trusting his process, he was finally able to afford renting space inside a gym.

That opportunity is also where his future business partner Bryce Calloway entered the picture.

At the time, Bryce was already training clients inside a local facility under his own entity, Daygo Built. As any true former coach and mentor would, Bryce put in a good word for DeAndre and the rest was history.

As DeAndre explains it:

“Me and Bryce did so well together that we outgrew the facility we were first renting. So we were like, you know what — let’s do this together. Let’s put Stew’s Performance and Daygo Built together to make Daygo Performance.”

Eventually, that idea to join forces was the initial step that built the foundation of the gym as we know it today. But what truly makes their business unique isn’t just the workouts or the environment. It’s the story behind the name.

When I asked DeAndre what it meant to have an established business in San Diego as someone who was born and raised in the city, he explained:

“We wanted to represent where we came from. Everyone knows when you’re from a certain part of the city you call it ‘Daygo’, and sometimes the term itself is represented in a negative light. But we wanted to make it more into a positive aspect. We’re building a community as Daygo… but in a better light.”

The space regularly opens its doors for community gatherings, networking events, and opportunities for local entrepreneurs to connect with one another. Even while being interviewed, DeAndre made it clear that the platform he and Bryce are building is rooted in something much bigger than business.

When asked to describe the mission behind the gym, he put it simply:

“We are semi-private. We have gym memberships, independent contractors, recovery specialists — we’re just here to put people on. There’s a lot of people in the city who want recognition, whether it’s their fitness, their business, or their brand. They’re trying to grow but they don’t know where to start… that’s where they come. They come to us and we just help you get put on.”

Why I Chose DeAndre for Everyday Celebrity

When I started the Everyday Celebrity series, my goal was simple: highlight entrepreneurs who are building something meaningful in their communities but may not yet have the visibility they deserve.

For me, this feature is also personal.

DeAndre is a childhood friend of mine, and I’ve had the chance to witness his journey long before the gym existed. From training people at the park to now running a full-sized facility, the transformation has been inspiring to watch.

And that’s exactly why he represents what Everyday Celebrity is about.

Fitness and nutrition are not always emphasized enough in the Black community, and seeing someone actively working to break that stigma is something that deserves recognition. By building a welcoming space where people of all races and backgrounds feel comfortable pursuing goals like weight loss, strength, and overall health, DeAndre has become a pillar in the community.

These are the types of people who should be celebrated.

The Bigger Picture

Great businesses deserve visibility. And in today's world, storytelling through photo, video, and digital content is often the bridge between a strong local business and broader recognition.

Daygo Performance already has the foundation.

Now it’s about making sure more people across San Diego know about it.

And if DeAndre’s journey proves anything, it’s that when passion meets community, the results can go far beyond just a gym membership.

Sometimes, it becomes a movement.
